The 12 spiritual laws of the universe are often misunderstood or misused. In this blog, I go through each law and how to understand and work with it on a practical level without spiritually bypassing or ignoring the reality of the world we share. Some people use spirituality to dismiss the advantages their privilege affords them or to ignore the suffering and injustices in the world this is an extremely limited and harmful way of seeing the world and everyone in it. The laws aren't meant to limit our thinking but expand it in a way that creates a true appreciation and connection to yourself and others.
It can be helpful to look at the laws as steps to a ladder of understanding. Every law builds on the previous one and is expanded upon in the next one.
1. The Law of Divine Oneness / The Law of One
This is the law that all the others rest upon. This law states that we are all connected through creation. Every single atom inside of you is connected in some way, shape or form to the rest of the universe you move through. This is the foundation of many religions and implies that all the love you send out comes right back and that all the harm you do (to yourself or others) also returns to you. As we’re all one the law points to the divinity and power in each of us to change and influence the world with even the smallest gesture.
2. The Law of Vibration
Everything in the universe has a frequency and vibration. Nothing ever stands still as everything is always either being pushed away or pulled towards something. Like attracts like (the 4th law) so if you want to attract anything you need to understand and match the vibration of it. This shows up in very basic ways like how if you complain a lot you’ll find friends who join in on the misery. Emotions have strong vibrational patterns which is why focusing on feelings like gratitude, cultivating appreciation and positivity can lift the overall happiness in your life from a vibration standpoint. Vibrations are also in our names and birthdays and this law is the basis of astrology, numerology, and other esoteric sciences.
3. The Law of Correspondence / The Law of Repeating Patterns
This law takes the law of vibration one step further as it says that the patterns in our lives are created in our thoughts. There is a quote by Lao Tzu that points to this:
"Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny."
Tzu is pointing to the fact that your future is found in the patterns you repeat (or disrupt ) every day. Patterns of all kinds will repeat themselves through families unless you decide to change them. When you change the pattern for yourself you can in effect (The Law of One) change the world. Â
4. The Law of Attraction
This is the law of vibration in action. Many people get scared by the notion that bad thoughts or low vibrations will somehow destroy their life because they’re unaware. The law is not a punishment but a very clear mirror of our self-worth and mindset. You’re surrounded by the outcome of goals, thoughts, patterns and decisions you’ve made in the past and are fully capable of making other decisions and attracting a different set of circumstances. Clarity around what you desire is paramount. The more specific you can be about what you want to attract the more successful you'll be. Focus on the feeling you want to experience more than any physical manifestation.
5. The Law of Inspired Action
Building on the Law of Attraction this law states that we can not just think our way to a better world - we must align our actions with the clarity we have around our bigger goals. You have to create new patterns (and brain pathways) if you want to achieve something new. So yes do create a vision board of your dreams but then find and execute actions immediately that will bring you closer to achieving them. Peta Kelly has a quote on this: You go first the universe goes further.
6. The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy
This law is like a trigger. It means that even the smallest action can have a profound effect. Like the seed of a mighty tree holds all the promise in its tiny shell so do you have the power within you to move mountains. On a practical level using this law means that you consciously do tiny things that uplift and push you forward. So blast your favorite song in the shower, wear clothes that make you feel good, do the kind thing, save money for the future and start your days out in the best way possible 'cause every small step counts. In finance, this is the compound effect.
7. The Law of Cause and Effect
Action = Reaction. Very easy to see in physics but just as applicable when it comes to your surroundings, relationships, and self-care. Taking care of and showing up for the people and things that matter to you is the best way of making sure you have someone to lean on and a place to call home if everything else falls apart. We can often see our personal blindspots manifested in our surroundings and feng shui is a practice that works with this law from the outside in.Â
8. The Law of Compensation
Trust that you will get paid! This law is the basis of many a proverb. You reap what you sow and so on. It instills trust in us that we will be compensno oneated for our work as long as we’re open to receiving in all the many ways that the universe can deliver. A way of using this law is by tipping and sending your abundance forward not just to people in need but to people who have served you in some way but that didn’t demand monetary payment. To use this law become the referral master and connect people with the best services and service providers. Know that anyone you help will pay you back in ways you don’t even know about yet.
9. The Law of Relativity / The Law of Perspective
Nothing and no one is inherently good or bad. Everything is a spectrum of expression and there is more than one perspective on any situation or challenge. Sometimes our darkest days are the point of no return on our hero's journey. Without darkness, the light wouldn't feel so good. The greatest teachings often come from great suffering. When there is no light around you ask yourself what the lesson could be in this situation. This law is helpful when you start feeling like a failure or even guilty over the amount of privilege you might have. There is always someone worse off - so be grateful! And there is always a way of using your experiences and power for good - so use your privilege and resources to build the future and legacy you would like to leave. This is where ‘everything happens for you, not to you’ comes in.
10. The Law of Polarity
Want to manifest something truly good? Then you have to be clear on what the exact opposite thing would be. Want to manifest love? Be clear on what you don’t want. Not on a physical or superficial level but on a deeply emotional and value-based level. This law teaches us through opposition. Good things might come in ugly wrappings as the lessons you learn from picking the wrong thing makes you so much clearer about what the right choice truly is. This is the law that teaches us to learn from our mistakes
11. Law of Perpetual Motion / The Law of Rhythm
Everything has its time. Nothing lasts forever. This goes for people, projects, seasons, and experiences. Ride the wave you’re on. If life is tough and challenging know that it will change. If everything is peachy then savor the moment but don’t try to make it last beyond the natural order of things. Each stage of life has tremendous gifts to offer. Embrace each new cycle and you’ll never have a midlife crisis or feel out of sync with your path. Watching the seasons change and being in tune with nature can help.
12. Law of Gender / The Law of Giving and ReceivingÂ
Not to be confused with biological gender terms. The feminine (yin) and the masculine (yang) are an expression of two primal forces in the universe. One is active, bright, outwardly focused, and always in motion. The other is quiet, contained, dark, and inwardly focused. These two forces are within us all and need to be balanced in all beings. One cannot exist without the other and to work with this law is to recognize where in your life the balance between giving and receiving is off. You have to allow both sides in you to have their say and get their way.
